Janus 39 features a masterclass by Janus photographer Vic Barnes on how to create the perfect caning photo fantasy.
Set in a Corrective Institute for teenage girls run by Arthur Jardine (Janus 23), the photo fantasy details the correction of two young women, Sarah Denton and Wendy East (Janus 45). We’ll be featuring some high quality images from both of their punishments on this page in the next couple of weeks but we wanted to highlight some of Vic’s peerless work with regard to Wendy East.
Firstly, what can be said about the front cover image? Let’s face it, as a spanking enthusiast you would buy this magazine without the need to look inside! That sly, knowing, sideways glance and those wisps of hair almost innocently out of place suggest this is a young woman in need of correction.
The first colour plate captures the prelude to this drama on the faces of everyone in the room. The steely determination of Mr. Jardine, the disbelief and shock at what is unfolding for the witness and the fearful anxiety of the intended recipient, who can barely meet the gaze of the man who is about to cane her. We can perhaps imagine Wendy’s attention alternating between Mr. Jardine and the cane he flexes with such menace. What a difference between Wendy’s expression in this photo and on the cover.
The above photo is powerful because the look on Mr Jardine’s face suggests the lifting of this skirt is just a routine and perfunctory aspect of his work. We can only imagine all the other young women who’s bottoms have been the subject of this disciplinarian’s attention.
After several strokes of the cane have been administered, Arthur Jardine slowly lowers Wendy’s knickers to reveal the welts on her pale bottom. Once again though, it’s the expression of contrition and shame on Wendy’s face that makes the image so potent.
Finally, this delicious impact shot is all the evidence we need that a proper caning has taken place and been captured for our delight.
It’s the performance Vic manages to get from all three particpants and the composition of his shots that sells this fantasy to viewer. It remains a very fine example of his work.

The early issues of Roué contained some beautifully composed images of corporal punishment from that golden era of spanking magazines in the late 70s and early 80s. The amazing thing about the photography in early Roué was that it looked to have come from a bygone era, even when it was first published.
That sense of ‘long ago’ imbued the black and white images especially with a powerful aura, suggesting they were somehow not posed, but perhaps an authentic record of punishments that actually took place.
There was a world of difference between this photography and the cheeky, playful type of shots that featured in spanking magazines during the early 70s. In these images there was a sense of realism that had not been present before. These magazine contained powerful tableaus where anxiety was etched on the faces of the young women awaiting punishment. It felt like it could be real – even though we knew it wasn’t.

Exhibit A in the Case against Dr M J Handley (cont.):
Dr Handley removes a strap from his inside jacket pocket. Without warning this five-tongued strap is lashed across the girl’s bare bottom. There are eight hard lashes as Dr Handley holds the girl steady, his left hand on her waist. The stripe marks are clearly visible across Miss Blanchard’s buttocks.
Following this Miss Blanchard is stretched out face down over the doctor’s lap. Dr Handley’s hand has now started to make contact with her bottom. Spanking continues until Miss Blanchard’s rear has been extensively marked up both with the strap and the palm of Dr Handley’s hand before, finally, the Doctor applies cold cream to the affected area.

Exhibit A in the Case against Dr M J Handley:
A set of photographs presented as evidence in the case against Dr Matthew Handley, Medical Officer to the Welfare Service. The girl in the photographs is Miss Tracy Marie Blanchard, a 19-year-old student at Chelmsden College of Arts.
She is seen entering Dr Handley’s private practice at Number 26 Strathmore Mansions on July 3rd 19**. Once inside Number 26, Miss Blanchard is required to perform a preliminary toe-touching exercise and the Doctor is seen kneeling down lifting her short skirt to examine the crotch of her white knickers.
Dr Handley then resumes undressing the girl and removing her skirt and knickers to leave her nude apart from the black high-heeled shoes. He indulges in some pseudo-medical ‘inspection’ of her body and his gloating expression can be clearly seen as he paws lecherously at her bottom.
In the next few photos we can see Dr Handley’s pre-punishment ritual. First the girl has been made to kneel upright before him, hands behind her back, in a posture of supplication. Then, still kneeling, she has to place her hands on her head. This pose is held for a further quarter of an hour as a prelude to the punishment proper…
