In the last week our good friends MarQe and Richard Windsor have posted Janus themed updates on their wonderful blogs and we’d like to say thanks to both of them. Many visitors to this site will be aware that Janus has a long and very interesting history. For the first time Jon Rayworth tells the story of the magazine, the shop and the many wonderful characters that have contributed to the Janus legend over more than 40 years. Check out the latest additions to our range of popular digital downloads. New titles added this week include Janus 34, Roue 5, 25 and 26. (The front cover of Roue 25 is a tremendous portrait of nervous anticipation.)

Janus 34, which was published in 1984 includes a wonderful photo fantasy ‘Hankering for a Spanking’ written by the then editor Peter French. Often the photo stories were linked in some way to previous issues and ‘Hankering for a Spanking’ is no exception. Marianne Burnham is single for the first time since she was 16. Her ex-boyfriend, schoolteacher Neil Harvey, has walked out on her for a younger model – Nicola Redway. (Neil’s encounter with Nicola appears in Janus 23.) Marianne enjoys having her bottom smacked and she desperately needs to be punished. She finds herself daydreaming that Neil is coming round tonight…

Surprisingly this photo story was never revisited in later editions of the magazine so we hope you enjoy this selection of images from the Janus archive. You can download a copy Janus 34 by clicking on the links above.

The focus of this week’s lesser-known photo fantasy is ‘What She Wants’ from Janus 88, which was published in 1991. It features a very cheeky looking young lady called Nicky who admits she is in need of a firm hand. Sadly she finds she has to coax her boyfriend to discipline her – I suspect very few readers here would need such encouragement to deal with Nicky!

The magazine also contains a wonderful ‘Reader’s Confession’ from 26-year-old Miss Dianne F, a nurse from Canada who was living and working in Dorset. Extensive correspondence convinced the editorial team of the authenticity of her account of a deepening friendship with her widowed English landlady…well worth reading.
